Amoral Gower Format: Paperback
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 25.21 $Gower wrote his vernacular poem Confessio Amantis at the same time as Chaucer embarked on The Canterbury Tales . It is therefore not overly surprising that Gower's poem is far less known today than Chaucer's. This study seeks to reinstate Confessio Amantis to its rightful place in the history of English literature by examining its ethics. Watt argues that the poem should not be read as a straightforward plea for the reader to live a moral life, but instead Confessio Amantis offers several levels of interpretation which the medieval reader would have been aware of. Placing the poem in its historical context, Watt shows that the poem was the product of a disordered world and this coloured Gower's often inconsistent presentation of gender, sex and politics. Much of the study draws on recent gender and queer theory as well as psycho-analytic theory.

Approaches to Teaching the Poetry of John Gower
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 41.57 $A poet who wrote fluently in Middle English, Anglo-French, and Latin, John Gower typifies the English Middle Ages. His economical and sober style, the topics he addressedmarriage, love, chivalry, social class, law, and religious faithand the depth and breadth of his references to earlier literature, myth, and folktale made his work attractive not only to contemporaries such as Chaucer but also to later poets such as Spenser, Shakespeare, and Milton. Gower is increasingly acknowledged as a poet whose texts offer unique opportunities to teachers wishing to introduce their students to the riches of medieval literature and culture. The essays in part 1, Materials, review the available editions and translations of Gowers works, compile useful electronic resources for teaching, and discuss the sources and analogues and critical work on his canon. In part 2, Approaches, contributors make recommendations for teaching the historical context of Gowers writing, involving topics from estates theory and law to confession and medicine; for examining his language and rhetoric in the classroom, including reading his work aloud; and for studying his works in various theoretical and comparative ways, with a special focus on his relation to classical as well as other Middle English authors. A final section considers the various classroom contexts in which Gower is taught, from community college to graduate school.

Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 37.71 $The first in a charming, evocative, and sharply plotted Victorian crime series starring a detective duo to rival Holmes and Watson. After her father dies, March Middleton has to move to London to live with her guardian, Sidney Grice, the country’s most famous private detective. It is 1882 and London is at its murkiest yet most vibrant, wealthiest yet most poverty-stricken. No sooner does March arrive than a case presents itself: a young woman has been brutally murdered, and her husband is the only suspect. The victim’s mother is convinced of her son-in-law’s innocence, and March is so touched by her pleas she offers to cover Sidney’s fee herself. The investigations lead the pair to the darkest alleys of the East End: every twist leads Sidney Grice to think his client is guilty; but March is convinced that he is innocent.
