Obsessional Neurosis (The Centre for Freudian Analysis and Research Library (CFAR))
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 39.99 $Despite the important place it occupies in both Freudian and Lacanian nosology, obsessional neurosis has received far less attention than its erstwhile companion hysteria. This book elaborates and deepen research into questions of obsession, going beyond the usual clichés which reduce obsession to the question "Am I alive or dead?". Emphasis is given to the structure of this neurosis, as distinguished from its symptomatology, and to clinical questions of work with obsessional subjects. The chapters provide discussions of some of the following themes: the creation of the category of obsessional neurosis and of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), the fate of desire and the inability to act in obsession, debt and guilt, obsessional manoeuvres and their implications for the treatment. The book will be of interest to readers with academic or clinical backgrounds who wish to deepen their understanding of obsessional neurosis from a theoretical or clinical point of view. Newcomers to the subject will find signposts here that guide them through the complex landscape of obsession and lead them to avenues they may wish to pursue further.

Psychoanalysis and Religion in the 21st Century (The New Library of Psychoanalysis)
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 64.91 $What can be gained from a dialogue between psychoanalysis and religion? Freud described religion as the universal obsessional neurosis, and uncompromisingly rejected it in favour of "science." Ever since, there has been the assumption that psychoanalysts are hostile to religion. Yet, from the beginning, individual analysts have questioned Freud's blanket rejection of religion. In this book, David Black brings together contributors from a wide range of schools and movements to discuss the issues. They bring a fresh perspective to the subject of religion and psychoanalysis, answering vital questions such as: How do religious stories carry (or distort) psychological truth? How do religions 'work', psychologically? What is the nature of religious experience? Are there parallels between psychoanalysis and particular religious traditions? Psychoanalysis and Religion in the 21st Century will be of great interest to psychoanalysts, psychoanalytic therapists, psychodynamic counsellors, and anyone interested in the issues surrounding psychoanalysis, religion, theology and spirituality.

Modern Couples: Art, Intimacy and the Avant-Garde
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 170.11 $This fascinating, interdisciplinary, and generously illustrated book presents creative pairings that defy the idea of the modern artist as a solitary genius. In the art world, pairs of individuals often inspire each other's works. These intimate relationships are explored in all their various forms--obsessional, conventional, mythic, fleeting, life-long-- in this book that illuminates the works of painters, sculptors, photographers, designers, poets, writers, musicians, dancers, and performers of the modern era. In addition to introductory essays, each couple is profiled in brief chapters that feature candid portraiture, a rich array of illustrated works that illuminate the impact each had on the other, and an introductory text that pinpoints the significance of the relationship, written by leading authorities. Two additional subsections explore the importance of collaboration, friendship, anti-establishment notions, and radicalism both within Surrealist couples and the Temple de l'Amitié in Paris. Reflecting a contemporary view of sexuality and relationships, this book also offers a counterpoint to the notion of the female as muse, presenting a more balanced portrayal of male and female creative output. This volume also reveals how creative individuals came together to overcome the constraints of their time, reshape art, redefine gender stereotypes, and forge new ways of living.

Religion, Culture and Mental Health
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 5.05 $Are religious practices involving seeing visions and speaking in tongues beneficial or detrimental to mental health? Do some cultures express distress in bodily form because they lack the linguistic categories to express distress psychologically? Do some religions encourage clinical levels of obsessional behaviour? And are religious people happier than others? By merging the growing information on religion and mental health with that on culture and mental health, Kate Loewenthal enables fresh perspectives on these questions. This book deals with different psychiatric conditions such as schizophrenia, manic disorders, depression, anxiety, somatisation and dissociation as well as positive states of mind, and analyses the religious and cultural influences on each.

Case Histories 2 (Penguin Freud Library) (v. 9)
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 64.00 $This volume contains the last four of Freud's six major case histories. The "Rat Man" first came to Freud in 1907, aged 29, suffering from obsessional fears and irresistible, violent impulses. The treatment lasted a year and the patient regained his mental health. Dr Schreber, sometime Appeal Court judge in Dresden, suffered from severe bouts of paranoid delusions. He was never Freud's patient and the analysis of this case was based on Shreber's autobiography. This gave Freud the opportunity of publishing his theory of the close connection between paranoia and repressed passive homosexuality - supported by Schreber's frank and detailed account of his fantasies and delusions. the "Wolf Man's" history is the longest, most complicated and the most famous of all Freud's cases. The rich young Russian patient who had suffered as a child from a hysterical fear of wolves and from religious obsessions, was treated by Freud for four-and-a-half years. In 1920 Freud published the incomplete analysis of a homosexual girl of 18. In it, female sexuality is considered far more deeply than in Freud's earlier work.

Haunts Of Black Masseur Format: Paperback
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 20.97 $In a masterful work of cultural history, Charles Sprawson, himself an obsessional swimmer and fluent diver, explores the meaning that different cultures have attached to water. Sprawson compares the meaning various societies have assigned to swimming—from classical Greece and imperial Rome to nineteenth-century England and Germany and the U.S. and Japan in the last fifty years. Sprawson gives us fascinating glimpses of the great swimmer heroes: Byron leaping dramatically into the surf at Shelley’s beach funeral; Edgar Allen Poe’s lone and mysterious river-swims; Rupert Brooke swimming naked with Virginia Woolf; Hart Crane swallow-diving to his death in the Bay of Mexico; Johnny Weismuller as athlete and entertainer. Informed by the literature of Swinburne, Goethe, Scott Fitzgerald, and Yukio Mishima; the films of Reifenstahl and Vigo; the Hollywood “swimming musicals” of the 1930s; and delving in and out of Olympic history, Haunts of the Black Masseur is a celebration of swimming that explores aspects of culture in a heretofore unimagined way.

Hardware River Stories
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 59.00 $In seven stories that limn the distances between wishes and realities, Hagy ( Madonna on Her Back ) creates narratives that echo with a distinctly American voice. At the same time, these fictions explore their characters' sense of place in the landscape of human relations. In the title story a man's obsessional love brings him to destruction. In "The Field of Lost Shoes," a clandestine and futile meeting of former lovers at a Civil War museum and battle site becomes an encounter between the man and the woman's young son. "Watching him run into the field with wheat up to his elbows and the beat of an imaginary drummer on his lips, I knew what cruelty was," muses the narrator. "Cruelty was forgetting the delicate paper heart of a child." The powerful final entry is "Kettle of Hawks," a tale of love and seduction and ruptured trust. Hagy has a voice that seeks the cadences and rhythms of the rural South or Midwest while maintaining an integrity and individual distinction. Thus these stories display an authenticity that goes well beyond the talented mimicry and impersonation of much first-person short fiction today. This accomplished collection should bring Hagy to the attention of those who value the art of fiction. Copyright 1990 Reed Business Information, Inc.

Inheriting the Future: Legacies of Kant, Freud, and Flaubert (Meridian: Crossing Aesthetics)
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 24.77 $This book explores several canonical works of philosophy, psychoanalysis, and literature. The surprising juxtaposition of Kant's moral philosophy, Freud's reflections on obsessional neurosis, and Flaubert's peculiar late novel Bouvard et Pécuchet forms the basis of a compelling argument linking each of these central works around the problem of moral thought as it fundamentally determines the modern subject in relation to time. The book engages an area of emerging importance in contemporary critical thought, the problem of ethics or "otherness" as a crucial factor at play in speculative and literary works. The readings in this book provide insight into the ways in which three fundamental philosophical, psychoanalytic, and literary texts can be reread in light of their confrontation with a seemingly inhuman force at the heart of the foundation of the human subject.
