Plato's Symposium : Issues in Interpretation And Reception
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 31.49 $In his Symposium, Plato crafted a set of speeches in praise of love that has influenced writers and artists from antiquity to the present. Early Christian writers read the dialogue's 'ascent passage' as a vision of the soul's journey to heaven. Ficino's commentary on the Symposium inspired poets and artists throughout Renaissance Europe and introduced 'a Platonic love' into common speech. Themes or images from the dialogue have appeared in paintings or sketches by Rubens, David, Feuerbach, and La Farge, as well as in musical compositions by Satie and Bernstein. The dialogue's view of love as 'desire for eternal possession of the good' is still of enormous philosophical interest in its own right. Nevertheless, questions remain concerning the meaning of specific features, the significance of the dialogue as a whole, and the character of its influence. This volume brings together an international team of scholars to address such questions.

Platos Sophist (Studies in Continental Thought)
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 46.85 $Students and scholars alike can now see for themselves why Heidegger's lectures on the Greeks in the 1920s caused such a stir, and they can judge just what it means to read a Greek text with Heidegger...The English translation is excellent, managing to capture some of the vibrancy of the lectures while maintaining a high degree of accuracy and readability. N John Ellis. This volume reconstructs Martin Heidegger's lecture course at the University of Marburg in the winter semester 1924ETH25, devoted to an interpretation of Plato (especially his later dialogue, the "Sophist") and Aristotle, especially Book VI of the "Nichomahcan Ethics". Published for the first time in German in 1992 as volume 19 of "Heidegger's Collected Works", it is one of Heidegger's major texts, because of its intrinsic importance as an interpretation of Aristotle and Plato and also because of its relation to "Being and Time". Composed at the same time, the lectures and "Being and Times" are complementary works in that both are commentaries on Plato's "Sophist". The lectures approach Plato through a detailed reading of the "Nichomachean Ethics", providing one of Heidegger's major interpretations of Aristotle. In a line-by-line interpretation of the "Sophist", Heidegger then takes up the relation of Being and non-being, the ontological problematic that forms the key link between Greek philosophy and Heidegger's thought.

Plato and Europe (Cultural Memory in the Present)
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 25.19 $The Czech philosopher Jan Patocka (1907-1977), who studied with Husserl and Heidegger, is widely recognized as the most influential thinker to come from postwar Eastern Europe. Refusing to join the Communist party after World War II, he was banned from academia and publication for the rest of his life, except for a brief time following the liberalizations of the Prague spring of 1968. Joining Vaclav Havel and Jiri Hajek as a spokesman for the Chart 77 human-rights declaration of 1977, Patocka was harassed by authorities, arrested, and finally died of a heart attack during prolonged interrogation. Plato and Europe, arguably Patocka's most important book, consists of a series of lectures delivered in the homes of friends after his last banishment from the academy just three years before his death. Here, he presents his most mature ideas about the history of Western philosophy, arguing that the idea of the care of the soul is fundamental to the philosophical tradition beginning with the Greeks. Explaining how the care of the soul is elaborated as the problem of how human beings may make their world one of truth and justice, Patocka develops this thesis through a treatment of Plato, Democritus, and Aristotle, showing how considerations about the soul are of central importance in their writings. He demonstrates in vivid fashion how this idea forms the spiritual heritage of Europe.

Plato and Pythagoreanism
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 126.08 $Was Plato a Pythagorean? Plato's students and earliest critics thought so, but scholars since the nineteenth century have been more skeptical. With this probing study, Phillip Sidney Horky argues that a specific type of Pythagorean philosophy, called "mathematical" Pythagoreanism, exercised a decisive influence on fundamental aspects of Plato's philosophy. The progenitor of mathematical Pythagoreanism was the infamous Pythagorean heretic and political revolutionary Hippasus of Metapontum, a student of Pythagoras who is credited with experiments in harmonics that led to innovations in mathematics. The innovations of Hippasus and other mathematical Pythagoreans, including Empedocles of Agrigentum, Epicharmus of Syracuse, Philolaus of Croton, and Archytas of Tarentum, presented philosophers like Plato with novel ways to reconcile empirical knowledge with abstract mathematical theories. Plato and Pythagoreanism demonstrates how mathematical Pythagoreanism established many of the fundamental philosophical questions Plato dealt with in his central dialogues, including Cratylus, Phaedo, Republic, Timaeus, and Philebus. In the process, it also illuminates the historical significance of the mathematical Pythagoreans, a group whose influence on the development of philosophical and scientific methods has been obscured since late antiquity. The picture that results is one in which Plato inherits mathematical Pythagorean method only to transform it into a powerful philosophical argument about the essential relationships between the cosmos and the human being.
