William Cunningham was one of the remarkable galaxy of theologians who graced the Faculty of New College, Edinburgh in the early years, where he served as Professor of Church History, and, from 1847, as Principal. A scholar of profound learning and acute judgment, Cunningham was also personally committed to knowing and following the truth, wherever it might lead him in this studies. Consequently his work is characterized by wide-ranging scholarship, by vigorous questioning and, supremely, by a sense of spiritual robustness rarely seen in modern theological writing. He was too careful a student of the Reformation period merely to follow traditional Protestant interpretations. Here for example, he rejects the common readiness to blame Zwingli for the manner of his death on the battlefield of Cappel. On the other hand, he is not slow to offer critical comment of the Reformers or their teaching where he believes that is warranted. Thankfully, shortly before his death, Cunningham committed to James Buchanan and James Bannerman, his colleagues at New College, the manuscripts he had already prepared for the press. These included the essays published in this fine volume, some of which continue to be recognized as landmark studies in the theology of the Reformation. According to a contemporary, William Cunningham did not merely 'lecture' to his students; sometimes he 'rampaged'. In his teaching, learning, earnestness and eloquence were welded together. The product, in this volume, is scholarship and spiritually of the noblest kind.

Besides absolutists of the right (the tsar and his adherents) and left (Lenin and his fellow Bolsheviks), the Russian political landscape in 1917 featured moderates seeking liberal reform and a rapid evolution towards a constitutional monarchy. Vasily Maklakov, a lawyer, legislator and public intellectual, was among the most prominent of these, and the most articulate and sophisticated advocate of the rule of law, the linchpin of liberalism. This book tells the story of his efforts and his analysis of the reasons for their ultimate failure. It is thus, in part, an example for movements seeking to liberalize authoritarian countries today―both as a warning and a guide. Although never a cabinet member or the head of his political party―the Constitutional Democrats or “Kadets”―Maklakov was deeply involved in most of the political events of the period. He was defense counsel for individuals resisting the regime (or charged simply for being of the wrong ethnicity, such as Menahem Beilis, sometimes considered the Russian Dreyfus). He was continuously a member of the Kadets’ central committee and their most compelling orator. As a somewhat maverick (and moderate) Kadet, he stood not only between the country’s absolute extremes (the reactionary monarchists and the revolutionaries), but also between the two more or less liberal centrist parties, the Kadets on the center left, and the Octobrists on the center right. As a member of the Second, Third and Fourth Dumas (1907-1917), he advocated a wide range of reforms, especially in the realms of religious freedom, national minorities, judicial independence, citizens’ judicial remedies, and peasant rights.

'It is indeed a joy to be able to read about the life and times of Basel's great Reformer, Johannes Oecolampadius, from Dr. Diane Poythress's pen. She writes in a very engaging style that helps to make the long-ago events of the sixteenth century come alive. Her presentation is scholarly, engaging with all the sources in a number of languages, correctly critical (when authors refuse to see the clear hand of God at action and ascribe 'secular' motivation), but most importantly introduces to English readers a beautiful facet of God's great reforming work in Switzerland. Poythress introduces her readers to Oecolampadius's life in its historical context. She traces his vast influence throughout Europe and helps the reader to understand why he is so important by presenting an annotated bibliography of his prodigious writings. With great depth of learning (including comparing his work with Greek fathers), she points out Oecolampadius's exegetical insights and contributions as well as his hermeneutical theory. Not content with that significant contribution, she also shows the scope of the Basel Reformer s theology. Dr. Poythress also provides an English translation of part of Oecolampadius's Isaiah commentary, giving her readers a sweet appetizer to the banquet of theology found at Oecolampadius's theological table. This work will satisfy scholars but will be a blessing to any reader.
