Mid Wales
Venditore: Ibs.it Prezzo: 15.43 € (+2.70 €)Overshadowed by Snowdonia to the north and the Brecon Beacons to the south, mid Wales is something of a 'green desert'. Shrouded by Celtic mists, it baffled the advance of the English invaders, thus preserving the Welsh language in the west of Wales. The tranquil borderland of the Marches, offers a varied landscape truncated by rivers meandering to lowland plains. Limestone to the west and north of the old red sandstone of the Hereford Plain has given rise to exceptionally attractive hilly country with delightful, narrow valleys.

Sigurd 'RAG' 2023

Gerald of Wales The Journey Through Wales and the Description of Wales
Venditore: Ibs.it Prezzo: 15.43 € (+2.70 €)Scholar, churchman, diplomat and theologian, Gerald of Wales was one of the most fascinating figures of the Middle Ages and The Journey Through Wales describes his eventful tour of the country as a missionary in 1188. In a style reminiscent of a diary, Gerald records the day-to-day events of the mission, alongside lively accounts of local miracles, folklore and religious relics such as Saint Patrick's Horn, and eloquent descriptions of natural scenery that includes the rugged promontory of St David's and the vast snow-covered panoramas of Snowdonia. The landscape is evoked in further detail in The Description, which chronicles the everyday lives of the Welsh people with skill and affection. Witty and gently humorous throughout, these works provide a unique view into the medieval world.

The Birds of Wales
Venditore: Ibs.it Prezzo: 71.25 €From its long coastline, with cliffs and islands that bustle with breeding seabirds in the summer, to its open moorland that hold some of the most southerly Curlews and Black Grouse, Wales packs a lot of birds into a small area. It is significant for its populations of Chough, Hawfinch and Pied Flycatcher, and its Manx Shearwaters are of global importance. And it has played an important role in the study of migration, as Skokholm was the first bird observatory in Britain.\n\n\nIt is almost 30 years since the first avifauna was published for all of Wales and much has changed. Knowledge of the status of many species has increased thanks to improved monitoring and a greater number of birdwatchers, and we have a better understanding of how humans have affected Wales' birds, particularly the twin challenges of land-use and climate change. The Birds of Wales synthesises the new information and sets it in context of each species' history in Wales. It tells the stories of all the birds that have been recorded here, whether common or rare, and looks forward, anticipating what may occur in the coming decades.\n\n\nIt will have an essential place on the bookshelf of everyone with an interest in birds in Wales and should be on the desk or in the rucksack of everyone who influences what happens to the nation's land and seas. It is a once-in-a-generation state of Wales' birds.

Philip Wallis South Wales and West Wales Buses in the Early 1960s
Venditore: Ibs.it Prezzo: 18.99 € (+2.70 €)Philip Wallis visited South and West Wales several times with his camera between 1961 and 1963 and captured on film a great variety of bus operators in that part of the country. Civic pride was strong and no less than seven municipal undertakings ran bus services in the coal-mining valleys of Glamorganshire and Monmouthshire, while capital city Cardiff and port town Newport each had their own large Corporation Transport Departments, with Cardiff maintaining the only Welsh trolleybus network at that time. Six British Electric Traction group companies operated in the area with fleet sizes ranging from the thirty-four vehicles of Neath & Cardiff Luxury Coaches to 674 buses and coaches with Western Welsh. British Transport Commission-controlled Red & White and United Welsh were significant in parts of the territory, adding variety by still running AEC, Albion, Guy and Leyland buses before sale to the BTC led to standardisation on Bristol buses. The tentacles of the mighty Crosville empire stretched down to Cardigan in far West Wales. Independent operation, using diverse new and second-hand buses, was strong across both industrial South Wales and rural West Wales.\n\nThis book profiles many of the operators and illustrates their vehicles through 180 colour and monochrome images, mostly previously unpublished.
