The one offered here by the Maccagno family winery is a fine red from the territory. Langhe DOC Dolcetto is produced from grapes harvested in the estate's vineyards with excellent southern exposure and an altitude of 220 metres above sea level. An ideal position, characterised by a favourable temperature range between day and night. After the harvest, the grapes are brought to the cellar to be sent to processing soon. We start by crushing and destemming the grapes to obtain the must. This is subjected to alcoholic fermentation, with a maceration period of about 8 days. Once the transformation is over, the wine is drawn off and a long ageing phase of 5 or 6 months begins, always in steel tanks. This is followed by bottling and further ageing for a few months before marketing. What is obtained is a wine characterised by a beautiful, lively ruby colour with violet reflections. The nose is pleasantly fruity, with immediate hints of ripe red fruit. In the mouth, however, it reveals itself to be a wine of medium structure, soft and with a pleasantly almondy finish. Served at the right temperature, never above 18°, this Dolcetto is simply ideal to accompany cured meats, white meats and medium-aged cheeses.

The choice of the Chionetti family to offer a Riesling Renano, Langhe DOC may come as a surprise. And yet it is enough to taste it to understand that the choice is not random. In this case, the grapes come from the commune of Dogliani, in the Martina hamlet. We are about 500 metres above sea level, on the southern slope of a hill characterised by whitish marl alternating with compact sandstone, the so-called "Langa stone". The soil is poor, shallow and even at risk of summer drought. But here, in this corner of Piedmont, the terroir is able to give personality and minerality to the wine. Just what a good Riesling needs to not go unnoticed. After vinification, the wine then rests for about 8 months "sur lie" in temperature-controlled steel tanks, acquiring greater complexity and depth. Straw yellow with green reflections, the nose presents delicate notes of white flowers and citrus fruits, alternating with more vegetal hints. A white that evolves well with time, in the mouth it reveals good acidity and freshness, as well as a pleasantly savoury finish. Rieslings, and this one is certainly no exception, are generally very versatile wines in terms of food pairings. Excellent with fish and shellfish, this interesting Chionetti white also goes well with white meats and goat's cheese.

Pecchenino offers this interesting Langhe Nebbiolo Bricco Ravera DOC, a Piedmontese red of fine personality and great character. It comes, of course, from the careful processing of 100% Nebbiolo grapes, harvested in the estate vineyards when they reach perfect ripeness. In the cellar, processing is traditional. Alcoholic fermentation, in particular, takes place in steel tanks and lasts for about 3 weeks. Then, in the post-maceration phase, the wine remains in contact with the skins for a further 4 weeks before being racked off. Malolactic fermentation and ageing in oak barrels follow. Ruby red colour, with slight garnet hues. The nose is rich, powerful and concentrated, with distinct hints of ripe fruit. In the mouth it is fresh and full-bodied, with hints of red and black fruit, such as blueberry and blackberry. The tannin is ripe, soft, silky and well integrated. There is a particular almond note on the finish. A balanced and refined red, on the table it does not struggle to find its rightful place. Excellent with traditional hors d'oeuvres and meat dishes. Excellent with medium-aged cheeses and mushroom dishes.

In the glass it has a beautiful ruby red colour of good intensity tending towards garnet. The nose reveals an elegant perfume, with hints of raspberries, rose and liquorice. In the mouth, it is full, harmonious, very fine and above all endowed with great persistence.

For many years Dolcetto was an almost forgotten wine. Not by the people of Langhe, mind you, but by the supposed experts/enthusiasts. After all, it was not easy for this pleasant but not complex wine to emerge in the regional panorama dominated by two sacred giants onsters of oenology such as Barbera and Nebbiolo. And yet today Dolcetto, thanks also to the commitment of small, high-quality producers, seems to be finally succeeding in emerging and finding its own large group of admirers. A fine example of a pure Dolcetto is this Langhe Doc, characterized by a brilliant red colour of medium intensity with faint violet reflections. On the nose, the characteristic aromas of red fruits, such as blackberries and berries, stand out. The mouthfeel is well balanced and elegant. Pleasantly fruity and rightly tannic. The finish recalls almonds, a typical trait of the vine.

Il Principe by Michele Chiarlo is a Nebbiolo that perfectly represents the name it bears. Obviously it does not reach the power and importance of King Barolo but, when paired correctly at a dinner with friends, it will certainly have its say and will not make us regret the choice. It comes from young vines from both the Barbaresco and Roero areas. A careful but traditional vinification is followed by an ageing phase of at least 12 months, in steel, wood and bottle. The result is a wine characterized by an intense ruby red colour. On the nose notes of red fruits, violet and spices. In the mouth it is balanced, with good structure and freshness, with fine and elegant tannins. It closes with a precise and crisp finish.

An international white wine in a region that is world-famous for its native reds ‘ Yes. A challenge taken up by Pecchenino with this Riesling that is born on the hills of Langa, where at most one could expect clusters of Arneis or Cortese. And challenge passed with flying colors, let's be clear. The grapes come from the vineyards of Bossolasco, in the hills. Harvest at a perfect state of ripeness and simple but careful vinification in steel. Then, before bottling, the wine is left to mature, again in steel, for about 9 months in contact with its fine lees. A process that closely resembles that used for the great French and German Rieslings. The result ‘ A wine with a lively straw yellow color, and sensations on the palate and nose of mineral, crisp fruit, herbs and especially hydrocarbons. A real treat for fans of the style. A perfect glass for an evening of strong flavors.

Together with Arneis, the Favorita grape constitutes the white-grape ampelographic base of the Roero. Favorita by name... and in fact, since over the centuries it has won the sympathy of local winegrowers for its good yield and ability to adapt to different conditions. A close relative of Vermentino, of which it is considered 'identical', it probably has Ligurian origins. But it is in Piedmont, particularly in the Roero area, where it has been its land of choice since as far back as 1700. Here it succeeds in giving excellent results, producing wines of great intensity and vivacity. Just like this Langhe DOC, proposed by Cantina Maccagno, 100% Favorita, fermented in temperature-controlled steel tanks and aged for a few months, again in steel, before bottling. In the glass it has a beautiful pale straw yellow colour, with fruity hints and floral notes. In the mouth, it stands out for its fine minerality and slightly almondy finish. A simple (not banal) and fresh wine, this Favorita proves to be a perfect choice to accompany aperitifs. Also excellent with fish starters and fresh cheeses.

The Langhe DOC Nebbiolo of Azienda Agricola G.D. Vajra is a pure expression of the Langhe terroir. It is born in Barolo and is distinguished by its purity and elegance. 100% Nebbiolo. An autochthonous Piedmont grape variety, known for its ability to best express the characteristics of the terroir, the one used by the family to produce this wine comes from vineyards that benefit from unique climatic conditions. Harvesting is done manually, selecting only the best bunches. After the harvest, the grapes undergo a 30-day fermentation, followed by malolactic fermentation, which occurs naturally. This helps to stabilise the wine and give it softness. Subsequent ageing takes place for 5 months in steel vats, a method that preserves the freshness and purity of the fruit, before bottling. In the glass, it has a brilliant garnet colour. On the nose, an intense and complex bouquet, with notes of raspberry, cherry and mountain berries, accompanied by delicate hints of rose petals, violets, lavender and mint. The palate is elegant and refined, with flavours of crisp red fruits, orange peel and sweet spices, enriched by earthy and mineral nuances. The finish is long and persistent, with a pleasant freshness that invites another sip. Best drunk young, within 5 years of harvest, it pairs well with red meats and mature cheeses. Excellent with traditional Piedmontese dishes such as braised beef with Barolo, roast lamb and local cheeses.

We do not know what inspired Borgogno's marketing manager to come up with such an unusual name. "No Name", in fact, is the commercial name that appears on the iconic label of this Langhe Nebbiolo DOC. A clean, white label in the style of the historic Piedmontese winery, with the name (or rather the NO NAME) written in big letters right in the middle. And a small "protest label" written in the bottom corner. Protest or not, this Nebbiolo DOC from Borgogno is certainly not a wine of little interest. Harvested by hand, spontaneously fermented in cement tanks, lightly pressed and matured for three years in large oak barrels. Nothing is left to chance. In fact, there are no protests about quality! Or rather, it is not discussed. Ruby red colour with violet reflections. The nose is persistent, ethereal, with hints of flowers such as roses and violets and fresh fruit. Then spices. In the mouth it is dry, harmonious, velvety, full-bodied, austere and generous. As always in these cases, the perfect pairing calls for the great classics of Piedmontese cuisine, such as game and braised meats. After all, this is a wine with a great structure. Without protest!
