Young Children Continue to Reinvent Arithmetic - 3rd Grade (Early Childhood Education Series)
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 56.42 $As in previous volumes, Kamii uses Piaget's groundbreaking work in constructivism as well as her own years of research in classrooms to closely observe what third grade children actually "do" when solving problems of addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. Her work translates Piaget's theory into a concrete programme that encourages children to use maths in real ways that stimulate them to reinvent arithmetic. She also challenges "quick-fix" theories of educational reform, replacing these with one that revolutionises our understanding of how human beings acquire knowledge, and thus drastically changing what we think schools should try to do. Educators have long been trying to transmit knowledge to children from the outside. What reform needs is a focus inside the child to maximise the process of construction from within. The volume is divided into four parts. The first gives a theoretical foundation, the second, goals and objectives, the third consists of chapters on problem solving, group games and other activities. The final part presents principles of teaching and answers frequently asked questions. The last chapter is about the evaluation of constructivist teaching and documents how children with three years of constructivist maths were able to reason far better than traditionally instructed children.

Subsystems of Second Order Arithmetic (Perspectives in Logic)
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 58.63 $Foundations of mathematics is the study of the most basic concepts and logical structure of mathematics, with an eye to the unity of human knowledge. Almost all of the problems studied in this book are motivated by an overriding foundational question: What are the appropriate axioms for mathematics? Through a series of case studies, these axioms are examined to prove particular theorems in core mathematical areas such as algebra, analysis, and topology, focusing on the language of second-order arithmetic, the weakest language rich enough to express and develop the bulk of mathematics. In many cases, if a mathematical theorem is proved from appropriately weak set existence axioms, then the axioms will be logically equivalent to the theorem. Furthermore, only a few specific set existence axioms arise repeatedly in this context, which in turn correspond to classical foundational programs. This is the theme of reverse mathematics, which dominates the first half of the book. The second part focuses on models of these and other subsystems of second-order arithmetic. Additional results are presented in an appendix.

Thinking Mathematically: Integrating Arithmetic and Algebra in Elementary School
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 32.31 $In Children's Mathematics: Cognitively Guided Instruction, Thomas Carpenter, Megan Franke, and Linda Levi helped tens of thousands of teachers understand children's intuitive problem-solving and computational processes. More important, the authors helped teachers figure out how to use that knowledge to enhance students' understanding of arithmetic. In this book the same author team takes teaching and learning mathematics to the next level, revealing how children's developing knowledge of the powerful unifying ideas of mathematics can deepen their understanding of arithmetic and provide a solid foundation for learning algebra. This book also shows how teachers can increase their own knowledge of mathematics in the process of interacting with their children and reflecting about their practice. Thinking Mathematically provides numerous examples of classroom dialogues that indicate how algebraic ideas emerge in children's thinking and what problems and questions help to elicit them. Special features of the book help teachers develop their own understanding of mathematics along with their students': Teacher Commentaries capture the voices of a number of teachers, providing realistic portrayals of what happens in class.End-of-chapter Challenges offer a variety of problems and activities for teachers to increase their own knowledge of mathematics and to help their students develop algebraic thinking. An accompanying CD provides rich illustrations of ideas in the book-extended interactions with individual children or classroom episodes-all clearly linked to the text.

Bounded Arithmetic, Propositional Logic and Complexity Theory (Encyclopedia of Mathematics and its Applications, Series Number 60)
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 159.44 $This book presents an up-to-date, unified treatment of research in bounded arithmetic and complexity of propositional logic with emphasis on independence proofs and lower bound proofs. The author discusses the deep connections between logic and complexity theory and lists a number of intriguing open problems. An introduction to the basics of logic and complexity is followed by discussion of important results in propositional proof systems and systems of bounded arithmetic. Then more advanced topics are treated, including polynomial simulations and conservativity results, various witnessing theorems, the translation of bounded formulas (and their proofs) into propositional ones, the method of random partial restrictions and its applications, simple independence proofs, complete systems of partial relations, lower bounds to the size of constant-depth propositional proofs, the approximation method and the method of Boolean valuations, combinatorics and complexity theory within bounded arithmetic, and relations to complexity issues of predicate calculus. Students and researchers in mathematical logic and complexity theory will find his comprehensive treatment an excellent guide to this expanding interdisciplinary area.

Number Theory - Modular Arithmetic : Math for Gifted Students
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 25.27 $Official site with more information and practice: www.mathallstar.org. Remainder does not seem to be a big topic in school math. However, in competition math, it is. Almost every contest at middle school and high school level has remainder related problems. For example, in 2017 AMC 10B, out of total 25 problems, at least 3 are related to this topic: the 14th, 23rd, and 25th. Modular arithmetic is a branch in mathematics which studies remainders and tackles related problems. However, this important subject is not taught in schools. Consequently, many students rely on their intuition when attempting to solve such problems. This is clearly not the best situation. This book aims to provide a complete coverage of this topic at the level which is suitable for middle school and high school students. Contents will include both theoretical knowledge and practical techniques. Therefore, upon completion, students will have a solid skill base to solve related problems in math competitions. More information, including table of contents, pre-assessment etc, can be found at http://www.mathallstar.org/
