Integers, Polynomials, and Rings: A Course in Algebra (Undergraduate Texts in Mathematics)
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 36.54 $This book began life as a set of notes that I developed for a course at the University of Washington entitled Introduction to Modern Algebra for Tea- ers. Originally conceived as a text for future secondary-school mathematics teachers, it has developed into a book that could serve well as a text in an - dergraduatecourseinabstractalgebraoracoursedesignedasanintroduction to higher mathematics. This book di?ers from many undergraduate algebra texts in fundamental ways; the reasons lie in the book’s origin and the goals I set for the course. The course is a two-quarter sequence required of students intending to f- ?ll the requirements of the teacher preparation option for our B.A. degree in mathematics, or of the teacher preparation minor. It is required as well of those intending to matriculate in our university’s Master’s in Teaching p- gram for secondary mathematics teachers. This is the principal course they take involving abstraction and proof, and they come to it with perhaps as little background as a year of calculus and a quarter of linear algebra. The mathematical ability of the students varies widely, as does their level of ma- ematical interest.

Integer Programming
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 60.03 $A practical, accessible guide to optimization problems with discrete or integer variables Integer Programming stands out from other textbooks by explaining in clear and simple terms how to construct custom-made algorithms or use existing commercial software to obtain optimal or near-optimal solutions for a variety of real-world problems, such as airline timetables, production line schedules, or electricity production on a regional or national scale. Incorporating recent developments that have made it possible to solve difficult optimization problems with greater accuracy, author Laurence A. Wolsey presents a number of state-of-the-art topics not covered in any other textbook. These include improved modeling, cutting plane theory and algorithms, heuristic methods, and branch-and-cut and integer programming decomposition algorithms. This self-contained text: * Distinguishes between good and bad formulations in integer programming problems * Applies lessons learned from easy integer programs to more difficult problems * Demonstrates with applications theoretical and practical aspects of problem solving * Includes useful notes and end-of-chapter exercises * Offers tremendous flexibility for tailoring material to different needs Integer Programming is an ideal text for courses in integer/mathematical programming-whether in operations research, mathematics, engineering, or computer science departments. It is also a valuable reference for industrial users of integer programming and researchers who would like to keep up with advances in the field.

50 Years of Integer Programming 1958-2008: From the Early Years to the State-of-the-Art
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 24.52 $In 1958, Ralph E. Gomory transformed the field of integer programming when he published a paper that described a cutting-plane algorithm for pure integer programs and announced that the method could be refined to give a finite algorithm for integer programming. In 2008, to commemorate the anniversary of this seminal paper, a special workshop celebrating fifty years of integer programming was held in Aussois, France, as part of the 12th Combinatorial Optimization Workshop. It contains reprints of key historical articles and written versions of survey lectures on six of the hottest topics in the field by distinguished members of the integer programming community. Useful for anyone in mathematics, computer science and operations research, this book exposes mathematical optimization, specifically integer programming and combinatorial optimization, to a broad audience.

Representations of Integers As Sums of Squares
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 5.58 $During the academic year 1980-1981 I was teaching at the Technion-the Israeli Institute of Technology-in Haifa. The audience was small, but con sisted of particularly gifted and eager listeners; unfortunately, their back ground varied widely. What could one offer such an audience, so as to do justice to all of them? I decided to discuss representations of natural integers as sums of squares, starting on the most elementary level, but with the inten tion of pushing ahead as far as possible in some of the different directions that offered themselves (quadratic forms, theory of genera, generalizations and modern developments, etc.), according to the interests of the audience. A few weeks after the start of the academic year I received a letter from Professor Gian-Carlo Rota, with the suggestion that I submit a manuscript for the Encyclopedia of Mathematical Sciences under his editorship. I answered that I did not have a ready manuscript to offer, but that I could use my notes on representations of integers by sums of squares as the basis for one. Indeed, about that time I had already started thinking about the possibility of such a book and had, in fact, quite precise ideas about the kind of book I wanted it to be.

The Encyclopedia of Integer Sequences
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 33.05 $This encyclopedia contains more than 5000 integer sequences, over half of which have never before been catalogued. Because the sequences are presented in the most natural form, and arranged for easy reference, this book is easier to use than the authors earlier classic A Handbook of Integer Sequences<$>. The Encyclopedia<$> gives the name, mathematical description, and citations to literature for each sequence. Following sequences of particular interest, thereare essays on their origins, uses, and connections to related sequences (all cross-referenced). A valuable new feature to this text is the inclusion of a number of interesting diagrams and illustrations related to selected sequences. The initial chapters are both amusing and enlightening. They serve as a delightful introduction to the subject and a short course on how to identify and work with integer sequences. This encyclopedia brings Sloanes ground-breaking Handbook<$> up to date, more than doubling its size, and linking both the old and the new material to an extensive bibliography (over 25 pages long), of current and classic references. An index to all the sequences in the book is also available separately on disk in Macintosh and IBM formats.Contains more than 5000 integer sequencesGives the name and mathematical description of each sequenceProvides citations to literature for each sequenceExtensively cross-referencedLists a bibliography of more than 25 pages
